Is Balearia Deceiving Moroccans?

Balearia Maroc Plans Shift to Electric Ferries by 2027 Amid Infrastructure Challenges

Balearia Maroc recently announced its intention to transition its vessels to electric power by 2027. However, a report highlights significant challenges, noting that both the Tangier and Tarifa ports, where the company operates, currently lack the infrastructure for high-voltage electricity supply. Furthermore, there are no official plans or programs in place to equip these ports with the necessary electrical facilities in the next two years.

According to the report, providing high-voltage electricity to the Tangier and Tarifa ports is complicated due to their urban locations and the substantial costs associated with such infrastructure upgrades. The primary source of high-voltage electricity for ports is local dams; however, the distance between any nearby dam and the ports is considerable. Currently, the Tangier Mediterranean port is the only facility with access to this type of electricity.

Since Balearia commenced operations on the Tangier-Tarifa route, the company has faced complaints from consumers regarding ticket prices, particularly as the travel season approaches. In response, Balearia is promoting its commitment to clean energy and environmental preservation by announcing the launch of two electric ferries by 2027.
