Ecuador reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the “basis for resolving” the regional dispute over Western Sahara. This statement was made by Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, during a press conference following her meeting with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad.
Ecuador also expressed its backing for Morocco’s efforts aimed at achieving a political, realistic, pragmatic, and lasting solution to the dispute, reflecting the position of the majority of United Nations member states.
Notably, on October 22, 2024, Ecuador withdrew its recognition of the “Sahrawi Republic” and ceased all communications with this entity.
