Guatemala Supports Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative
On Thursday, the Republic of Guatemala affirmed that Morocco’s autonomy initiative, proposed in 2007, is “the only serious, reliable, and realistic basis for moving forward toward a lasting agreement” to resolve the ongoing dispute, while fully respecting Morocco’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
This position was articulated by Guatemala’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Ramiro Martínez Alvarado, during a press conference following his meeting in Rabat with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita.
Minister Martínez Alvarado expressed Guatemala’s full support for Morocco’s efforts to reach a political, realistic, practical, and durable solution that is acceptable to all parties involved in the regional dispute.
Both Morocco and Guatemala reiterated their commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Notably, Guatemala became the first country in Latin America to open a consulate in the city of Dakhla in December 2022.
