Taxi Fare Increase Approved in Tangier
Taxi drivers in Tangier have received notification from the Economic Department of the Tangier-Assilah province regarding the approved increase in the minimum taxi fare.
The new regulation raises the minimum fare from 5 dirhams to 7 dirhams during the day and to 10.50 dirhams at night.
Refusal to Distribute the Decision
On Tuesday, July 1st, representatives of taxi drivers met with officials from the Economic Department. During this meeting, the decision was read, and its implementation was announced, but distribution to the taxi professionals was refused.
Professional driver Ahmed El Rifi commented on the refusal, stating that the reason remains unclear. He emphasized that Morocco values democracy and freedom of expression; therefore, announcements concerning such decisions should be made transparently and responsibly.
El Rifi urged officials to expedite the distribution of the decision and to make it public so that professionals can avoid conflicts with customers who may seek documentation confirming the fare increase.
Insufficient Increase
Taxi drivers expressed that the increase is modest and does not meet the needs of Tangier’s taxi professionals. They noted that second-class taxi drivers have faced various increases over the past years, yet this has not been reflected in their fares.
The drivers clarified that the decision addresses only the minimum fare, leaving other demands unresolved, particularly concerning the timeline for implementing the night fare and road charges.
