In Casablanca, police have apprehended a suspect linked to the theft of an elderly man. The arrest followed the widespread circulation of a video on social media that captured the incident.
The video depicted a driver stealing from a frail elderly man, who was using a cane, in a public street in Casablanca. Initial investigations revealed that the case was being handled by the Ibn Misk Security District. Notably, the victim had not filed an official complaint prior to the video’s release, highlighting the role of social media in exposing crimes.
Following extensive inquiries, police identified and arrested the suspect on Thursday evening. He is currently undergoing judicial questioning under the supervision of the relevant public prosecutor’s office. The investigation aims to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident, determine the motivations behind it, and confirm the criminal actions attributed to the suspect.
Since the video’s release earlier this week, the 70-year-old victim has gained considerable public sympathy in Morocco. The footage illustrated how the man was robbed of his money and left distressed on the street.
According to the individual who posted the video, upon exiting a taxi in the Sbata area and sitting in the street, the elderly man was approached by a man in a black car who offered to help. The suspect promised to give him money, asked for his bag to place the cash inside, and then drove off with 500 dirhams, leaving the elderly man in despair.
