Rabat – The French Football Federation has requested that FIFA annul the yellow card issued to Michael Olise during France’s World Cup round-of-16 victory over Paraguay.
Olise received the card late in the match after an encounter with Paraguay midfielder Matias Galarza.
French officials contend that the Bayern Munich winger did not make contact with his opponent and should not have been penalized.
This card is significant because a second yellow before the quarterfinals would result in an automatic one-match suspension.
Yellow cards are wiped clean after the quarterfinals, but a player who receives two before that reset will still be sidelined for the next match.
France Frustrated by Paraguay Match
France won 1-0 against Paraguay to secure a spot in the quarterfinals, with Kylian Mbappe netting the only goal from the penalty spot.
The match featured numerous tense moments, particularly in the closing stages.
According to The Guardian’s live report, Galarza fell after approaching Olise, leading the referee to issue a yellow card to the French player.
Criticism of the decision was voiced strongly by French media and supporters.
Multiple reports highlighted that Paraguay finished the match without receiving a single yellow card despite their physical play and numerous fouls.
FIFA’s Decision on Balogun Intensifies Scrutiny
France’s appeal comes just after FIFA lifted Folarin Balogun’s automatic red-card suspension, allowing the U.S. striker to compete against Belgium.
FIFA invoked Article 27 of its disciplinary code, permitting a judicial body to suspend the enforcement of disciplinary actions either fully or partially.
Instead of an immediate suspension, Balogun is now under a one-year probationary period.
This decision sparked widespread debate, particularly after Belgium expressed astonishment and claimed that FIFA’s action contradicted standard World Cup regulations.
Morocco Awaits France
France is set to play against Morocco on Thursday in the World Cup quarterfinals.
The match will commence at 9 p.m. Moroccan time in Boston.
Morocco advanced to the last eight after defeating Canada 3-0, while France secured their place with a narrow win over Paraguay.
Olise is expected to be eligible for the match against the Atlas Lions, but the yellow card could have implications if France progresses and he receives another booking.
France’s appeal increases scrutiny on FIFA, especially following the Balogun decision, as other teams may seek similar leniency for what they perceive as unjust disciplinary measures.
