The coach of the Algerian national team, Vladimir Petković, confirmed in a press conference on the evening of Tuesday, January 6, in Rabat, that the changes he made during the extra halves of the match between Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (1-0) tipped the balance in favor of “the Greens.” They then excelled in creating chances and threatening the opponent’s goal on more than one occasion.
Petković explained after the match, which ended with the Algerian team winning by a single goal in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations (Morocco 2025), that what is important during knockout stages in such prestigious tournaments is exploiting the right moment to score and achieve victory.
He added, “It was difficult to make changes because several players were suffering from minor injuries. However, we managed to handle that and secure the victory in the end and qualify for the quarter-finals.”
Petković emphasized that all matches in such tournaments “are challenging on both tactical and physical levels.”
In discussing the upcoming match against Nigeria in the quarter-finals, the Algerian coach said, “It will be a difficult and tough match. We will start thinking about it tomorrow after assessing the physical condition of our players (…) I am happy that we faced teams like Burkina Faso and today the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
The Algerian national team will face its Nigerian counterpart in the quarter-finals, which had secured its passage to the same stage on Monday after defeating Mozambique by four goals to none.
