The appearance of a poster in a hotel in Morocco, due to its hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations “CAN 2025”, sparked controversy in the press and social media in Nigeria because of the image of Seyi Tinubu, the son of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A Nigerian activist known as VeryDarkMan documented the incident in a video, which later spread very quickly and was widely circulated.
The poster surprised many Nigerians due to its inclusion of Seyi Tinubu’s image, a name not recognized with any official or sporting connection to the tournament, and there is no known involvement of him in football or any organizational role within the African Union.
VeryDarkMan commented with sarcasm and astonishment, saying: “Guess who is on the poster in Morocco… Seyi Tinubu! Does he play football?”
The Nigerian activist questioned the reason for a Nigerian political figure’s image on a poster for a continental event organized in another country, considering it “illogical and suspicious,” implying that it might reflect Seyi Tinubu’s early political ambitions outside the official context.
The controversy did not stop there, as VeryDarkMan accused the ruling party in Nigeria (APC) of “political desperation.” He considered that using images of individuals from the president’s family in unexpected contexts, even outside the country, reveals a confused and unusual electoral strategy.
He said in the video: “Seyi Tinubu, it’s clear you are taking your election campaign very seriously… you are really desperate.”
Despite the coverage of the incident by Nigerian press, no official clarification or comment about the reality of the poster or its background has been issued so far.
