Young Man Arrested for Setting Fire to Girlfriend in Las Palmas
In a shocking incident in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a 20-year-old Moroccan man named Abdelrafi has been arrested for setting fire to his 17-year-old girlfriend, causing her severe burns.
The crime occurred early Wednesday morning around 4:00 AM in an illegally occupied home where the couple was living. According to local media reports, the assailant threw burning paper, after dousing the girl with a flammable substance, resulting in burns covering 95% of her body. This brutal act has not only left the victim in critical condition but also raised serious questions about the motives behind such a horrific crime.
Emergency services responded quickly after a neighbor reported a fire in the residence by calling the emergency number 112. This prompt response allowed medical teams to assist the victim at the scene before transporting her urgently to the University Hospital of Gran Canaria by ambulance.
The girl, who had previously resided in a youth center before moving in with the assailant, is now in extremely serious health condition. She is currently in the hospital’s intensive care unit, fighting for her life due to her severe burns. Arrangements are being made to transfer her to a burn unit in Seville, depending on the progression of her condition in the coming hours.
The perpetrator also suffered from smoke inhalation and is receiving treatment at the same hospital. However, he is under police guard as the National Police investigate the incident as a suspected case of gender-based violence.
