LONDON (AP) — King Charles III welcomed Prince Harry for a family reunion on Friday, marking their first gathering in years as they work to mend their strained relationship since Harry and his wife stepped back from royal life and relocated to America six years ago.
Harry, along with Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, met with the King and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House, a country estate west of London, as confirmed by Buckingham Palace.
The Duke of Sussex arrived in the UK on Monday for various charity events, which were overshadowed by speculations about whether he would meet his father.
British media buzzed with questions about whether Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, would join him and if their children would attend to finally meet Grandpa Charles.
Given the monarch’s tightly scheduled itinerary, which is often planned years in advance, the opportunity for such a meeting was brief. This urgency was heightened by the impending school year for the children and their residence in California.
Earlier this week, tensions escalated between Harry and royal officials when confusion emerged over an invitation for Harry to stay at Buckingham Palace, which was later rescinded due to his delayed response.
Harry’s visit coincided with the loss of his final lawsuit against the Daily Mail over privacy invasion claims.
These ongoing legal disputes have strained his relationship with the family. Harry has expressed a desire to reconcile with his 77-year-old father, who is currently undergoing treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.
Harry and Charles previously met briefly over a cup of tea in September, their first encounter in over a year. Harry hopes his children will connect with the monarch, whom they last saw during the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
Now that Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, are old enough to remember meeting their grandfather, they may look forward to photos with him, although the gathering was private and no images will be public.
Tensions within the House of Windsor have escalated since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties and moved to California in pursuit of lucrative media opportunities free from royal obligations in London.
The situation reached a new low following the release of Harry’s controversial memoir, which contains unflattering accounts of the royal family and serious allegations regarding the monarchy’s relationship with the media.
Harry’s book claims that members of the royal family leaked information about others in exchange for favorable media coverage. The prince was particularly critical of Camilla, alleging she shared private conversations with the press to enhance her public image after her long affair with Charles.
Despite losing a court battle concerning his security last year, Harry has expressed optimism for rebuilding familial connections, fearing for the time he has left with his father, stating, “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore.”
Friday’s visit marks a significant step towards mending the family relationship.
