A significant oil refinery in Saratov, Russia, ceased operations on July 8 following a Ukrainian drone strike, according to reports from Reuters on July 9, citing anonymous sources.
The Saratov Oil Refinery has frequently been targeted by Ukrainian forces, with the most recent attack confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelensky as occurring overnight on July 8.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of long-range strikes on Russian refining capabilities, which have intensified in scale and frequency throughout 2026.
Sources suggest that the CDU-6, the refinery’s sole crude distillation unit, may have sustained damage during the attack. The facility has a processing capacity of around 20,000 metric tons of oil daily, equivalent to approximately 147,000 barrels.
The Saratov refinery produces over 20 different petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, and bitumen. In 2023, its processing volume reached 4.8 million metric tons, contributing to supplies for the Russian military, according to Ukraine’s General Staff.
Ukraine has successfully intensified its deep strike campaign against Russian oil infrastructure, targeting oil depots and disrupting operations at major facilities, with some locations ceasing operations indefinitely.
Strikes on oil depots on July 9 caused significant fires in the city of Tver, leading to a local state of emergency declared in the Stavropol Krai region. Additionally, the Ukrainian military reportedly targeted the Ilsky Oil Refinery in southern Russia a day later on July 10.
These refinery strikes have increased pressure on the Kremlin, exacerbating a domestic fuel supply crisis, which has already led to export bans, rising prices, and sales restrictions throughout Russia.
On July 8, the Russian government announced a ban on diesel fuel exports until at least the end of the month, following weeks of successful Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure.
Saratov is located approximately 150 km (100 miles) from the Kazakhstan border and nearly 600 kilometers (370 miles) east of the front line in Ukraine.
