Switzerland confirmed today, Friday, that it “considers the initiative of autonomy” proposed by Morocco “the most serious, credible, and pragmatic basis” for resolving the regional dispute over Western Sahara.
This position was expressed in a joint statement adopted by Ignazio Cassis, the Federal Councillor, Vice President of the Swiss Confederation, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, who is on a working visit to Bern.
In the same adopted document, Switzerland “praised” the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797, confirming that “a true autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could represent one of the most viable solutions.”
Switzerland also reminded of its “support for the pivotal role played by the United Nations, as well as for the efforts made by the personal envoy of the Secretary-General.”
Switzerland’s reaffirmation of its support for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco falls within the continuity of the growing international consensus generated by the dynamics initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, in favor of the Moroccanity of the Sahara and in support of the autonomy initiative.
