Lionel Messi has entered history once again through the widest of doors, today Monday, becoming the all-time top scorer in World Cup tournaments, having raised his tally to 17 goals from six appearances in the global celebration.
The player, who has won the Ballon d’Or eight times, has broken the previous record held by the German Miroslav Klose (16 goals) since 2014. Messi scored his historic goal during the match between Argentina and Austria (2-0) in the 2026 World Cup.
Messi, at nearly 39 years old, continues his exceptional career, making a strong start in this version by scoring a hat-trick against the Algerian national team.
After scoring his first World Cup goal in 2006 against Serbia and Montenegro, the World Champion of the 2022 edition adds another achievement to his legendary record, confirming his place among the greatest players in the history of football.
