The Northwestern African region, including Morocco, is experiencing indirect effects from the Atlantic storm Francis, the sixth in the list of storms with significant impact for the 2025-2026 season, named by the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere.
The storm will begin to affect the Canary Islands starting January 1, 2026, and its effects are expected to extend to Morocco with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and high waves.
According to reports from the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other European sources, Morocco will be among the countries most heavily affected by this deep Atlantic storm, alongside Spain and Portugal.
Meteorology experts expect heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, gale-force winds, and rising sea levels along the Atlantic coasts.
Expected impacts in Morocco:
- Heavy rains: significant accumulations in northern and coastal areas, potentially leading to localized flooding, especially in vulnerable areas such as Tangier, Rabat, and Casablanca.
- Strong winds: gusts reaching 80-100 km/h.
- Coastal phenomena: high waves along the Atlantic coasts, with advice to avoid maritime activities.
- The effects may also include snowfall in the Atlas Mountains if the storm interacts with air masses.
