The General Directorate of Meteorology in Morocco has issued a special alert bulletin (number 151/2025) with an orange vigilance level, warning of severe weather fluctuations including heavy snowfall, strong rain sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms, and a wave of severe cold, starting today, Friday, December 19, and extending over the coming days.
The bulletin indicates snowfall above an altitude of 1700 meters with quantities ranging between 10 and 20 cm in the regions of Ifrane, Khenifra, Midelt, Taza, Sefrou, Boulemane, and Beni Mellal, starting from Saturday, December 20.
It is also expected that larger quantities (15-35 cm) above 1500 meters will be recorded in Ifrane, Khenifra, Midelt, Boulemane, Sefrou, Taza, Beni Mellal, and Azilal, with lower quantities (5-15 cm) in Al Hoceima, Wazzan, Tinghir, Al Haouz, Figuig, Jerada, and Taourirt, from Sunday, December 21 to Monday, December 22.
Heavy rain is expected, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms, with quantities of 35-60 mm in Fnideq, Larache, Wazzan, Tangier-Assilah, Tetouan, Mdiq-Fnideq, Khenifra, Al Hoceima, and Chefchaouen, and 25-35 mm in other areas such as Sidi Qasim, Rabat, Salé, and Meknes, on Sunday, December 21.
Low temperatures are expected to reach -8 to -4 degrees Celsius below 1600 meters in Boulemane, Ifrane, Midelt, Khenifra, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Tinghir, Wazzan, Al Haouz, Taroudant, and Chichaoua, from Friday to Sunday.
These fluctuations come after years of drought, raising hopes for the renewal of water supplies, but also raising concerns about road slides, local flooding, and isolating mountain villages. Authorities urge caution and advise avoiding unnecessary travel in the affected areas.
