The UNESCO organization approved Algeria’s request for an amendment aimed at adding the word “caftan” to two files that were registered in 2012 and 2024. The amendment came a day after the inclusion of the Moroccan caftan in the UNESCO list.
According to what was decided on Thursday, December 11, UNESCO approved the addition of the phrase “wearing the caftan” to the file of the customs and artisanal skills associated with the wedding attire of Tlemcen, after it had been registered in the list in 2012 without including the phrase “caftan”.
UNESCO also agreed to change the title of the file “Women’s festive attire in the eastern region of Algeria: knowledge and skills related to making and decorating the kandora and melhafa,” by adding the word “caftan” as well.
Algeria justified its request by stating that this amendment came at the request of local communities and for educational and cultural purposes.
For its part, “Haiti” opposed the amendments, asserting that the Algerian amendment is unclear, and that it should not be retroactive or affect elements registered by other countries, referring to Morocco.
Haiti attempted to introduce amendments to the amendment request but ultimately withdrew it, aiming to reach a consensus among the members.
