The National Commission for the Protection of Personal Data (CNDP) in Morocco announced that it will employ advanced technologies to trace the leakage of personal information on the dark web. This new automated monitoring tool, developed with assistance from a Moroccan digital security company, will quickly detect if stolen personal data has been posted online. If any suspicious information is found, the commission will contact the companies or institutions responsible for the data and remind them of the applicable laws.
Moroccan law (No. 09-08) clearly stipulates that companies must notify the commission in advance about how they handle people’s data, such as customer names or account numbers. Failure to comply may result in fines or other penalties.
In the future, the commission plans to acquire additional tools to enhance its capabilities, as revealed in an announcement on Friday, November 7.
### Why This Matters to You
Recently, incidents of data theft in Morocco have increased, including cases involving government institutions. This indicates that your personal information may be at risk, paving the way for fraud or financial loss. With this new initiative, the commission aims to serve as a “guardian” monitoring the digital dark web daily.
For companies, this underscores the need to adhere to regulations to avoid complications. For citizens, it means improved protection: if your data is stolen, you will be notified quickly, and you can file a complaint through the hotline or the commission’s website.
### Simple Tips to Protect Yourself
– Regularly change passwords and use strong combinations (mix of letters and numbers).
– Do not share personal information through untrusted links, and always verify the official website.
– Utilize antivirus software on your phone or device.
– If you suspect something, contact the commission immediately through their website.
