Belgium expressed its support on Thursday for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco in 2007, which positions the Sahara region “within the framework of the kingdom’s sovereignty and national unity.” Belgium confirmed that it will act “from now on at both the diplomatic and economic levels based on this position.”
This stance was articulated in a joint statement signed by Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, and Didier Reynders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Development Cooperation in Belgium, following their meeting in Brussels.
Recognizing the “existential importance of the Sahara issue” for Morocco, Belgium stated in the same joint statement that the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 constitutes “the most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic basis for reaching a political solution.”
Minister Bourita welcomed this significant development in Belgium’s position, describing it as “a clear acknowledgment of the realism and legitimacy of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision for the final settlement of this regional dispute.”
This new position aligns with the international dynamics supporting Morocco’s autonomy initiative, which has garnered backing from numerous countries worldwide, reflecting an increasing convergence around a pragmatic approach based on dialogue, stability, and regional cooperation.
