Actor Abdelkader Matah Passes Away at 85

On Tuesday, October 21, Moroccan actor Abdelkader Mtaï passed away in Casablanca at the age of 85.

The late actor leaves behind a significant legacy and a clear impact on Moroccan audiences through his remarkable performances in a long list of television, theater, and cinema works.

He is regarded as a prominent figure of his generation, having featured in the film “Wachma” directed by Hamid Bennani (1970) and becoming well-known among Moroccan viewers as “Tahar Belfriyat,” a character he portrayed adeptly in the series “Khamsa w Khmisa” (1987).

The deceased began his long career alongside some of Morocco’s brightest acting talents when he joined the Al-Maamoura Theater Company in the early 1960s. His unique voice also paved the way for his popularity as part of the radio and television acting troupe.

His performances, shaped by a self-made artistic identity, were characterized by a strong presence that skillfully blended comedy and drama.

Significant milestones in his career include “Wachma,” “Al-Bandia” (2003), “Playing with Wolves” (2005), and “Dogs of the Village” (2010) in cinema, as well as “Khamsa w Khmisa,” “Setta min Settin” (1988), “Wolves in the Circle” (1997), “Awlad Nas” (1999), “Dawaïr al-Zaman” (2000), “One Day that Resembles a Day” (2008), and “The Tears of Men” (2014) on television.
