The police in Germany announced that at least three people were killed and several others injured after a regional passenger train derailed in a forested area in the southwest of the country on Sunday, July 27.
Around 100 passengers were on board the train when the incident occurred at approximately 18:10 local time (16:10 UTC) near Reutlingen in Baden-Württemberg, about 100 kilometers south of Stuttgart.
A spokesperson for the German police confirmed the deaths to AFP, adding that “several people were injured.”
No further details about the number or severity of the injuries were provided by the police. However, Bild newspaper reported that emergency workers indicated there were about 50 injured.
German railway company Deutsche Bahn reported “several fatalities and a large number of injuries.”
It noted that two carriages of the train derailed “for reasons still unknown,” and authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident. Train services have been halted over a stretch of approximately 40 kilometers.
German media reported that a landslide may have caused the derailment, which occurred amid severe thunderstorms in the area, according to weather reports.
The passenger train was traveling from Sigmaringen to Ulm when it went off the tracks in a forested area.
