Morocco: A Call for Water Conservation During the Summer

The Prime Minister’s Office emphasized the need for caution and increased awareness regarding water consumption, particularly during the summer when pressure on water resources escalates.

On Wednesday, July 9, the Office reported that water reservoir levels in the kingdom reached approximately 4.3 billion cubic meters, equating to a filling rate of about 37.4% as of July 7.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office noted that during a meeting led by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch in Rabat, the National Water Supply and Irrigation Program for 2020-2027 indicated that while the water situation has improved, continued caution is necessary. It also highlighted the importance of promoting water conservation, especially given the high demand during the summer. Awareness campaigns are needed alongside urgent measures to ensure a continuous supply of drinking water, particularly in rural areas.

The statement further mentioned that the meeting reviewed the progress of program implementation and the emergency measures taken to ensure drinking water supply and alleviate irrigation water shortages, in line with royal directives.

Water Projects

The meeting also examined advancements in the National Water Supply and Irrigation Program for 2020-2027, led by relevant ministries and public institutions. This includes the construction of two linking projects between the Sebou and Abu Raqraq basins, and between the Wadi al-Makhazen and Dar Khroufa dams. Additionally, the filling of eight major dams is scheduled between 2021 and 2025, alongside initiatives to enhance seawater desalination capacity to over 1.7 billion cubic meters by 2030. Efforts to supply rural areas with safe drinking water and to reuse treated wastewater for irrigation are also prioritized.

The meeting made adjustments to the small dams program and planned modifications for major and medium dams in regions with significant rainfall.

Prime Minister Akhannouch urged all stakeholders in the sector to maintain their engagement and mobilization for the effective implementation of the program according to the established timeline, in line with royal directives. He also stressed the importance of achieving harmony between water policies and agricultural strategies.
