Mauritania Resumes Relations with Israel

Mauritania is preparing to take a step toward resuming relations with Israel during a meeting at the White House between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani. The meeting is facilitated by U.S. President Donald Trump and is scheduled for Wednesday, July 9, 2025, alongside a mini U.S.-Africa summit that includes Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Senegal, and Mauritania.

Mauritania severed its diplomatic ties with Israel in 2010 in response to the conflict in Gaza, and relations between the two countries have remained frozen since then. This situation mirrors the stance of several Arab and African nations that either do not recognize Israel or have suspended their bilateral relations.

The current U.S. administration, led by Trump, appears to be aiming to change this dynamic by encouraging normalization between Israel and African states, including Mauritania.
