Country Bans Smoking for Anyone Born After January 2007

On Saturday, the Maldives began implementing a comprehensive ban on smoking, affecting all individuals born after January 1, 2007.

The Maldives Ministry of Health stated that this measure aims to protect public health and promote the emergence of a tobacco-free generation. The affected group is prohibited from purchasing, using, or selling tobacco products within the country.

The ministry confirmed that the complete ban on the importation, sale, and use of electronic cigarettes remains in effect for individuals of all ages. Penalties include fines of up to $3,200 for selling tobacco products to minors and $320 for using electronic smoking devices.

Retailers are required to verify age before selling these products, and the ban also applies to visitors in this nation, which consists of 1,191 small coral islands located approximately 800 kilometers from the equator.
