The head of the Bar Association in Tangier called for a complete cessation of practice starting Monday, June 15, 2026, until Sunday, June 21, 2026, in implementation of a statement from the Council of the Association issued today, Friday.
The Council of the Bar Association in Tangier held an emergency meeting on June 12, 2026, dedicated to discussing the legislative path of the profession’s draft law number 66-23, and the growing concern regarding certain provisions that affect the independence of the legal profession and the immunity of lawyers.
After reviewing the statements of the Minister of Justice and discussing the decision of the Office of the Association of Bar Associations in Morocco issued on June 10, 2026, the Council reiterated its commitment to rejecting any infringement on the independence of the profession, expressing its full adoption of the recommendations of the National Association.
The statement of the Association said: “The legislative battle is still ongoing, requiring the responsibility and sacrifice in defense of the independence of the legal profession and the immunity of lawyers, and in protest against any attempt to influence the public and legislative discussion related to the draft law.”
Complete Suspension of Defense Duties with Assurance of Continuity in Courts
The head of the Bar Association outlined the mechanisms for implementing this decision, which includes a complete cessation of professional practice and the suspension of all defense duties during the mentioned period. He also ordered the formation of standby committees in various courts to handle urgent cases and temporary difficulties, chaired by members of the Council and involving lawyers from the Young Lawyers Association, in coordination with professors Ahmed Suleiman and Adel Laroussi in the courts of Ksar al-Kabir, Larache, and Asilah.
