Nur al-Din al-Harraq, President of the National Association of Café and Restaurant Owners in Morocco, confirmed his complete rejection of any price increase, no matter the excuse, except for covering the expenses that cafés will incur to ensure the broadcasting of matches late into the night.
The current version of the World Cup imposes an exceptional rhythm due to the time difference, with most matches taking place very late (between three and five in the morning), placing café owners in an unprecedented challenge compared to previous tournaments.
In this context, some local authorities announced a decision allowing cafés and restaurants to operate until four in the morning, to enable citizens to follow the matches and support the Moroccan national team in this exceptional edition.
No to Disturbing the Atmosphere of Entertainment: A Firm Position Against Increases
In response to the usual concerns of citizens about some cafés raising drink and service prices during major sporting events,
al-Harraq said, “This month is a month of enjoyment and football entertainment, especially with the participation of the Moroccan national team. This matter is linked to representing the national flag, and financial considerations should not disturb the joy of Moroccans.”
He specified that the only exception is in special cases, where some cafés may need to bear additional expenses (such as renting chairs and additional equipment to accommodate the audience).
He explained that any slight adjustment in price should be limited to covering these costs exclusively, and must remain within reasonable and justified limits.
Late Match Timing: Flexibility and Guarantees for Continuity
Regarding concerns associated with the late timing after midnight, al-Harraq confirmed that local authorities had not issued any decision prohibiting cafés from opening their doors at night. In fact, the decision allowing operation until four in the morning reflects a kind of implicit approval and flexibility, to enable citizens to support the “Atlas Lions” and follow the tournament in a comfortable atmosphere.
He added, “Professionals are fully prepared to provide exceptional service, with complete respect for the Moroccan customer who eagerly awaits these moments.”
