The Port of Algeciras announced a halt to truck entries coinciding with a decision to cancel all trips connecting it with both the ports of Tangier Med and Ceuta, according to the latest decision issued on the morning of Wednesday, January 28.
The decision came due to a storm named “Cristine” by Portugal, which is hitting the Strait of Gibraltar, causing very strong winds and massive waves.
Based on the weather conditions, the Port of Algeciras announced
- Entry is completely closed to trucks, and no new truck is allowed to enter the facility.
- All waiting areas and parking spots inside the port are fully occupied, meaning thousands of trucks are accumulating in the outer areas and nearby service stations, some of which have been waiting for days.
- All scheduled ferry trips today from Algeciras to Ceuta and Tangier Med have been canceled.
These measures come as a continuation of the actions initiated on Tuesday with the previous storm Joseph, where truck access was closed and container terminals ceased operations, and conditions continued to deteriorate with the arrival of Cristine.
Forecasts indicate that Cristine will continue to have a strong impact on Wednesday, with a gradual improvement expected starting Thursday, but winds and waves may remain high for several days. Travelers and carriers are advised to keep up with official updates.
