Protests in Tangier Display Anti-UAE Slogans in Solidarity with Sudan

Protesters at the Sidi Moumen area in Tangier raised slogans against the United Arab Emirates during a solidarity demonstration with the Sudanese people, condemning human rights violations amid the ongoing civil war.

The Attac Association, which organized the event over the weekend, called for immediate international solidarity to end the conflict and hold accountable the external supporters of the warring parties.

According to a statement from the association, dozens of activists, intellectuals, and human rights advocates participated, holding banners denouncing “foreign interventions fueling the destruction in Sudan.” The most prominent slogans targeted the UAE, calling for a “boycott of the UAE” over allegations that it supports the Rapid Support Forces, accused of committing atrocities, particularly in the Darfur region.

This call comes amid increasing international accusations against the UAE for its involvement in the Sudanese conflict. Since the outbreak of the war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023, reports from international human rights organizations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have raised questions about the UAE’s role in arming and financing the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti).

In March 2025, the Sudanese government filed an official complaint with the International Court of Justice in The Hague, accusing the UAE of “complicity in genocide” in Darfur, citing evidence of arms transfers via Chad and Libya. In recent years, similar protests have occurred outside UAE embassies in European capitals, such as The Hague, where Sudanese citizens demanded a halt to military support.

The United Arab Emirates has strongly denied these allegations, reaffirming its commitment to supporting peace and stability in Sudan. In recent statements at the UN Security Council, the UAE representative condemned “any form of military intervention,” emphasizing Abu Dhabi’s “consistent and clear” stance in supporting the Sudanese people through humanitarian aid.

The UAE has allocated millions of dollars to the UN Humanitarian Fund for Sudan, in partnership with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), to assist the two million displaced and affected by the war.

Furthermore, the UAE has urged the Security Council sessions to “redirect efforts towards civilians,” stating that “both parties to the conflict are outside the future of Sudan,” and called for an inclusive dialogue involving all parties.
