Generation Z Protests in Tangier: Authorities Issue Ban on Demonstrations Scheduled for September 27 and 28

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, Tangier witnessed a heavy security intervention aimed at preventing a planned protest as part of the “Gen Z 212” campaign (#GenZ212), leading to tensions in Place des Nations and resulting in several arrests.

The intervention occurred amid concerns over escalating protests reflecting increasing public anger over social and economic issues, particularly in the healthcare sector, which recently triggered demonstrations in various Moroccan cities.

In Tangier, dozens of young people gathered at Place des Nations, where a heavy police presence intervened after 6 PM to clear the area, informing attendees that gatherings and demonstrations were prohibited.

As some youths insisted on their right to protest and raised banners emphasizing peacefulness, security forces forcibly dispersed the crowd and detained several individuals.

Simultaneously, alongside protests in Tangier and other Moroccan cities, the hashtag #GenZ212 emerged, referring to the group of young protesters identifying as part of “Generation Z.” These demonstrations in Morocco seek to replicate similar protests held by this demographic in Nepal.

Through social media, this group is calling for reforms in the healthcare and education sectors and improvements in economic conditions.
