Canada stated that it recognizes the Moroccan autonomy plan as a basis for a solution acceptable to both parties, considering it a serious and credible initiative to achieve a fair and lasting settlement of the conflict.
The Canadian Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, expressed this position in a phone call with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad.
According to a statement issued by Global Affairs Canada, the ministers emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Canada and the Kingdom of Morocco during the talks, reiterating their commitment to building renewed relations based on mutual respect, constructive dialogue, and openness, with joint efforts to give new momentum to these relations.
Minister Anand acknowledged the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco, pointing out the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2797 on October 31, 2025. She confirmed that Canada recognizes the Moroccan autonomy plan as a basis for a solution acceptable to both parties, viewing it as a serious and credible initiative to achieve a fair and lasting settlement of the conflict.
In this context, the Canadian Minister emphasized the need to reach a permanent, fair, and mutually acceptable political settlement, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.
Minister Anand also expressed her desire to make an official visit to Morocco in the coming weeks, and the ministers agreed to work towards this to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries and deepen the dialogue regarding the Sahara issue.
