The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration reported, in a statement on Thursday, February 12, that following the closure of the road leading to Tangier 2 local prison due to the flooding of the nearby river, the admission of new incoming prisoners has been temporarily transferred to the local prison in Asilah, and a flexible measure for remote legal proceedings has been adopted, in coordination with the judicial authorities.
It added that efforts have been made to increase the frequency of all prisoners’ access to fixed telephone services to communicate with their families, after the temporary suspension of family visits due to the inability of visitors to reach Tangier 2 prison.
The delegation confirmed that no casualties were reported due to the exceptional weather conditions experienced in several regions of Morocco, thanks to the precautionary measures it stated it had hastened to implement.
It clarified that these measures mainly consisted of increasing vigilance and mobilization among staff within the correctional institutions located in the affected areas, while ensuring the continuity of securing a sufficient strategic stock for the supply of essential food items, as well as the continued provision of other services to inmates.
Regarding what has been addressed by some social media pages about the situation of prisoners at the local prison in Ksar al-Kabir, the delegation pointed out that this correctional facility has been closed since October 2020.
