Weather experts expect Morocco to witness significant atmospheric activity during December 2025, with possibilities of extensive areas experiencing strong cold waves, heavy rainfall, and snowfall in mountainous regions.
Recent climate updates, according to experts from the “Arab Center for Climate,” indicate a clear influence of jet stream undulations, along with the activity of the polar vortex, which enhances the chances of cold air masses moving towards the country.
Factors Influencing Weather in Morocco
- The polar vortex: The area of cold expands over the Arctic during this month, facilitating the movement of cold air towards Morocco.
- Sudden stratospheric warming: This may lead to destabilization of the polar vortex, increasing the likelihood of cold descents.
- La Niña phenomenon: This phenomenon enhances winter in North Africa by increasing the oscillation of the jet stream and the number of low-pressure systems.
- Siberian and Azores Heights and sea temperatures: These affect the path of storms and increase the moisture available for precipitation.
Climate Forecasts for Morocco
Beginning of December: Widespread atmospheric disturbances with varying rainfall and unstable weather in most regions.
December 3: A severe polar descent, with a noticeable drop in temperature, heavy rainfall, and snowfall in the highlands.
December 5: A deep polar low in the central Mediterranean, accompanied by rain and snow in several areas.
December 13: A strong polar mass, with high chances of snowfall on the mountains.
December 18: A very cold mass and instability affecting several areas in Morocco.
End of December (New Year’s Eve): A new polar descent, extremely cold conditions with a high probability of rainy and snowy events.
Thus, temperatures are expected to be lower than the usual average for this month, and rainfall will also be above average, with high chances of flooding in low-lying areas.
Regarding snow, there are significant opportunities for snowfall in the mountainous regions. The number of low-pressure systems is expected to be 5 to 6 major systems throughout the month.
Analyses from the “Arab Center for Climate” indicate that the winter of 2025–2026 may differ from previous seasons due to strong undulations in the jet stream and a decrease in long-term block systems, which raises the likelihood of ongoing cold descents and rainfall after mid-December.
