Country Bans Smoking for Anyone Born After January 2007

The Maldives has implemented a comprehensive smoking ban today, Saturday, affecting all individuals born after January 1, 2007.

The Ministry of Health stated that this measure aims to protect public health and promote the emergence of a tobacco-free generation, prohibiting the designated group from purchasing, using, or selling tobacco products within the country.

The same source confirmed that a complete ban on the import, sale, and use of electronic cigarettes remains in effect for all ages, with fines of up to $3,200 for selling tobacco products to minors and $320 for using electronic smoking devices.

Retailers are required to verify age before selling, and the ban also applies to visitors to the Maldives, an archipelago consisting of 1,191 small coral islands located approximately 800 kilometers from the equator.
