France triumphs over Morocco and eyes a matchup with Spain.

France has advanced to the World Cup semifinals following a 2-0 victory against Morocco at Boston Stadium. Although the score came late in the match, it wasn’t an easy win. Morocco maintained their organization throughout, with Yassine Bounou making a crucial penalty save, forcing France to stay composed until the game opened up.

The teams faced off again after their previous semifinal encounter in 2022, and Morocco entered the match with confidence in their ability to pose a challenge. France enjoyed more possession, had greater attacking prowess, and possessed a buffer for mistakes. However, Morocco’s disciplined defense and the talents of Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Diaz kept the French defense on alert.

France Remained Patient Against Morocco

During the first half, Morocco set up in a tight defensive formation, effectively blocking central lanes where Kylian Mbappe typically operates. Although Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele had some opportunities on the flanks, clear chances were scarce. Bounou provided an even greater boost for Morocco in the 27th minute by saving a penalty from Mbappe.

After missing the penalty, France didn’t rush their game. Didier Deschamps instilled composure in his team, trusting their abilities and anticipating when Morocco would have to stretch their defense. This patience proved essential; although Morocco defended admirably, maintaining their shape against a formidable opponent for the entire match was an uphill battle.

Mbappe and Dembele Break the Deadlock

The breakthrough came in the 60th minute. As Morocco advanced their lines, Mbappe seized a rare opportunity in a small pocket of space and finished clinically, giving France the lead and elevating his goal tally to eight in the tournament, placing him at the top of the Golden Boot race.

With the deficit, Morocco had to take risks, and France capitalized on this shift just six minutes later. Mbappe drew defenders away, allowing Dembele to find space for a shot that sealed the victory. While the final score doesn’t diminish Morocco’s resilience in the first hour, France showcased sharper execution once the match opened up.

France Set to Face Spain

While Morocco leaves feeling disappointed, they can also take pride in their growth throughout the tournament. Hakimi remained a consistent threat whenever Morocco pressed forward, though the absence of Ismael Saibari hampered their options as the match leaned in France’s favor.

Now, France prepares to take on Spain, with a trip to the final at stake. Spain presents a different challenge, particularly if they can maintain possession and limit France’s transition opportunities. However, France has made it this far without delivering flawless performances in every match. With Mbappe leading the scoring charts and Dembele regaining form, they enter the semifinal confident in their ability to continue this journey.
