JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African midfielder Jayden Adams, who represented his country in the World Cup, has passed away at the age of 25.
The news was confirmed by Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture, in a statement on Saturday.
“With profound shock and a heavy heart, I learned of the passing of Jayden Adams, a midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at just 25 years old,” McKenzie shared on X.
“South African football has lost one of its brightest talents, and our nation grieves alongside his family, teammates, and millions of fans.”
Adams played a crucial role in helping South Africa reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
Further details surrounding his death have not been disclosed.
McKenzie mentioned, “The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed. I urge the media and the public to approach this news with sensitivity and refrain from speculation.”
A moment of silence for Adams took place prior to the World Cup quarterfinal match between Norway and England in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday.
Adams participated in South Africa’s initial Group A matches against Mexico and the Czech Republic. McKenzie noted that Adams played in the second match just hours after learning of his grandmother’s passing. He also appeared as a substitute in the game against South Korea.
Before joining Mamelodi Sundowns last year, Adams spent several seasons at Stellenbosch, contributing to the club’s success in winning the CAF (African) Champions League this year.
“Death has tragically taken one of our own, stripping our nation of a remarkable athlete,” stated the South African Football Players Union on X. “We will always remember his humility, extraordinary talent, and how proudly he represented South Africa. Rest in peace, Jayden. You will never be forgotten.”
Condolences have also been expressed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African Federation of Trade Unions.
