After Morocco’s victory over the Netherlands on Monday, they progressed to face Canada in the Round of 16.
The match was a high-stakes defensive duel between two top teams in soccer. In stark contrast, Canada’s previous game against South Africa resembled a middle school checkers championship. To compete with Africa’s leading team, Canada must sharpen their performance significantly.
If Alphonso Davies is not in his usual position, his substitute will find themselves closely trailing Achraf Hakimi, tackling him like a lifeline.
Lastly, practice penalties. With two recent matches ending in shootouts, they’re becoming increasingly vital.
It’s clear the next round presents tougher challenges for Canada. The unfiltered experience against Morocco highlighted just how much tougher it is.

While statistics can’t replace emotions, they do illustrate the challenges. Canada completed 298 accurate passes against South Africa, landing the ball where intended. In contrast, Morocco executed 801 accurate passes against the Netherlands, achieving a 91% accuracy compared to Canada’s 79%.
If you misplace passes against Morocco, expect them to counter swiftly. If Hakimi has the ball, forget finesse—go in hard.
For Canadian fans, this situation raises concerns. However, the outlook remains optimistic. Achieving their initial goals, the team now stands at the brink of proving themselves.

It’s commendable that Canada has made it this far in the World Cup. Success at this level isn’t a mistake; if that were the case, losses would also have to be dismissed as mere flukes. Success and failure are part of the game.
That said, Canada has had a remarkable stroke of luck—like hitting the jackpot in a lottery.
While it’s important to celebrate the team’s achievements, it’s equally crucial not to get ahead of ourselves and believe we’ve suddenly entered the elite ranks of soccer. Their performance thus far has been satisfactory, but not beyond that.
They’ve drawn with Bosnia (who struggled against Switzerland), defeated Qatar (who were down two players), lost to Switzerland (which lost to Qatar), and narrowly triumphed over South Africa (who were already playing for penalties).
If the tournament ended now, analysts might consider Canada’s performance decent but not outstanding. They’ve capitalized on their opportunities, which were considerable.
Being co-hosts turned out to be a bigger advantage than anticipated, especially with the favorable match schedule. Imagine the team’s mindset if they’d opened against Switzerland instead of riding high after a comeback against Bosnia, then facing South Africa in the knockouts. Few benefited from the draw more than Canada.
It’s likely that South Korea’s current frustrations stem from having expected to face Canada next.
Yet, Canada’s luck remains intact. Three potential paths lie ahead:
One is losing honorably to Morocco, which would be acceptable. A score of 1-0 or maybe 2-1 would suffice.
In their previous matchup in the 2022 World Cup, Canada fell 2-1 to Morocco. Matching that score in Saturday’s Round of 16 would be an achievement, according to Cathal Kelly.Matthias Hangst/Getty Images
When Canada last faced Morocco in the World Cup 2022, they lost 2-1 in a match that had dire stakes for Morocco. It wasn’t an exciting game, marred by an early blunder by Canada’s goalkeeper, but it wasn’t an outright defeat.
However, that match occurred before Morocco became a dominant force, as they would later eliminate Spain and Portugal before falling to France.
If Canada can replicate that performance this time (minus the early mistake), people would commend their efforts as “well played.”
Alternatively, a crushing defeat by Morocco would lead many to dismiss Canada’s entire tournament run as fortunate. It’d be tough to refute that claim and a disappointment for the program. It’s best to avoid such a fate.
Then, there’s the possibility of victory. While it’s hard to envision how this happens, perhaps Morocco might underestimate Canada and falter. On paper, they certainly seem the stronger team overall.
Yet, in sports, results are not decided on paper. Surprising outcomes are always possible. There exists a scenario where Canada plays the match of their lives, Morocco arrives unprepared, and the unimaginable happens.
If that were to occur, it wouldn’t just be the greatest win in Canadian men’s soccer history; it could become one of the most remarkable victories in any Canadian sport’s history. Based on recent performances, it would indeed be the most unexpected.
