Rabat – There’s something uniquely compelling about the matchup between Morocco and the Netherlands. Perhaps it stems from their shared history, or from the many Moroccan families residing in Dutch cities, navigating their loyalties. Whatever the reason, encounters between these two teams have consistently been thrilling, despite having faced each other only three times.
The rivalry began at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. Morocco, already eliminated, played their final group-stage match against the Dutch, who managed a tense 2-1 victory. Although Morocco exited the tournament, they certainly didn’t go quietly.
Fast forward to 1999, when Morocco finally claimed their moment in a friendly match in Arnhem, winning 2-1—their only victory against the Dutch to date. It was no fluke; this result signified that the competition was far from one-sided.
Fast forward to 2017 in Agadir, and the Netherlands replicated Morocco’s previous result, winning 2-1. Three matches, all determined by a single goal—this pattern can’t simply be chalked up to coincidence.
What truly sets this fixture apart is its emotional resonance. Many players have faced the dilemma of choosing between the two nations. Khalid Boulahrouz, Ibrahim Afellay, and Anwar El Ghazi opted for the Netherlands, while Hakim Ziyech and the Amrabat brothers, along with Noussair Mazraoui, chose to represent Morocco. These decisions were deeply personal, and their significance becomes palpable when the teams clash.
Morocco has shed its status as an underdog. After reaching the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup—making history as the first African nation to do so—the Atlas Lions have established themselves as credible contenders on the global stage. The respect they’ve garnered is now a given, rather than something they must earn with each match.
As we approach their 2026 World Cup clash, the Dutch may hold the edge with two victories to Morocco’s one. Yet today, Morocco is regarded as a formidable opponent, making that record less significant than it once was. When these teams meet, anticipate a fierce battle, as they’ve always delivered exhilarating contests.
