The coach of the Scottish national team, Steve Clarke, stated in remarks relayed by British and Scottish media that the Moroccan national team is one of the strongest teams in the tournament, just hours before the anticipated match today, Friday, between the two sides in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
Clarke emphasized that the Moroccan team represents a “real test” for his team, acknowledging the significant technical value possessed by the “Atlas Lions,” especially following their historic achievement in the 2022 World Cup when they reached the semifinals as the first African team to achieve this feat, after overcoming major teams such as Belgium, Spain, and Portugal.
The Scottish coach added that his team needs to deliver a performance much higher than in the first match against Haiti, particularly in terms of ball possession and creating chances, as he anticipates facing a team that excels in high pressing, physical readiness, and tactical organization.
Clarke also expressed confidence in midfielder Scott McTominay, considering him one of the key elements capable of making a difference in this match, thanks to his ability to shoot from outside the penalty area, his strong presence in the midfield, and his contribution to quick attacking transitions.
The Scotland coach noted that his team’s playing style against Morocco might depend on taking advantage of limited opportunities and transitioning swiftly from defense to attack, in facing a team that excels at controlling the pace of the game and imposing its rhythm.
These statements come in the context of the Scottish national team’s preparation for a tough match against the Moroccan national team, as they seek to achieve a positive result that enhances their chances of qualification, following a long absence from the World Cup lasting about 28 years.
