The title translates to: “The government agrees to convert colleges into ‘independent universities.'”

The government council approved today, Thursday, the draft decree No. 2.26.486 regarding the amendment and completion of decree No. 2.90.554 issued on 2 Rajab 1411 (January 18, 1991) related to university institutions and student residences, presented by the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation.

The Minister Delegate in Charge of Relations with Parliament, the official spokesperson for the government, Mustafa Baytas, explained during a press meeting following the weekly council meeting that this draft decree comes to keep pace with the transformations occurring in the higher education, scientific research, and innovation system, by developing the national university map and enhancing its capacity to respond to the increasing demand for higher education.

He added that this project aims to convert a number of multi-disciplinary colleges into independent university institutions specialized in the fields of law, political sciences, economics, management, applied sciences, languages, literature, and human and social sciences, as well as to divide the faculties of legal, economic, and social sciences into specialized institutions in order to enhance their management capabilities, achieve spatial justice, and bring university offerings closer to citizens.
