The Moroccan national team suffered a severe blow just days before the start of the 2026 World Cup, as the absence of Nayef Aguerd and Abdessamad Azilzouli from the final list was confirmed due to injuries.
The FIFA officially announced, in a document dated June 10, 2026, the exclusion of the players and the registration of their replacements: defender Marouane Saadane (player for Al-Fateh of Saudi Arabia) instead of Aguerd, and forward Ameen Al-Sebai (player for Angers of France) instead of Azilzouli, while keeping their designated numbers on the list.
Injury to Azilzouli Disrupts Offensive Plans
Abdessamad Azilzouli sustained an injury to the internal ligament of his knee during the friendly match against Norway, leaving the pitch before the end of the first half. Initial examinations showed he would need a treatment period ranging from two to three weeks, making him at least unavailable for participation in the group stage.
Azilzouli, known for his speed, dribbling, and individual solutions on the left wing, was considered one of the most prominent offensive assets for coach Mohamed Wahbi.
His absence disrupts the offensive balance of the Atlas Lions, especially given the difficulty in finding a substitute with the same characteristics.
Aguerd… Absence Weakens the Defensive Line
