On July 11-12, 2026, ACCORD took part in the Second Policy Conference of the Tangier Process, which focused on the interplay among Peace, Security, and Development. This event was held in Mombasa, Kenya, and represented by H.E. Ambassador Welile Nhlapo, a Senior Political Advisor at ACCORD. The conference was organized by the African Union Commission (AUC), specifically through its Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS). It gathered high-level officials from African Union (AU) Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), multilateral financial institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, and the private sector.
The two-day event featured five panels that explored interconnected aspects of the Peace, Security, and Development Nexus. Topics included the implementation of the Tangier Declaration, the influence of AI-driven and youth-led innovation, the trade-offs between military spending and development, the role of multilateral financial institutions in Agenda 2063 and reducing fragility, as well as insights from the African Facility to Support Inclusive Transitions (AFSIT) regarding complex political transitions.
Across all sessions, there was a strong call for moving from aspirational goals to tangible actions. Participants emphasized the need for a credible roadmap, enhanced cooperation among AU institutions, RECs, and Member States, and a more intentional approach to involving youth in designing and monitoring Nexus-related initiatives.
Prior to the main conference, ACCORD joined a High-Level Roundtable on the Global Order Reset on July 10, 2026. This roundtable provided a platform for leading thinkers and practitioners to discuss the structural changes influencing the global landscape and their implications for Africa. Topics such as a unified African foreign policy, the legitimacy of current multilateral institutions like the United Nations Security Council, and Africa’s capacity to leverage its resources and define its interests were key discussion points.
ACCORD’s involvement in the Tangier Process underscores its commitment to fostering African-led initiatives in peace, security, and sustainable development. The Tangier Process serves as a crucial continental platform aimed at transforming the aspirational goals of Agenda 2063 into practical, integrated actions.
