The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced the appointment of an entirely Argentine refereeing crew to manage the quarter-final match between the national teams of Morocco and France, scheduled for July 9 at Boston Stadium.
The main referee is Facundo Tello, assisted by his compatriots Juan Pablo Belati and Gabriel Chadi, with Dario Herrera as the fourth official and Cristian Navarro as the reserve. This is the first time in the history of the tournament that a complete match has been entrusted to a crew from a single country.
This appointment did not go unnoticed. Instead, it opened a wide door for controversy and theories, and provided an opportunity for the French media to begin preemptive pressure on the Argentine referee, drawing inspiration from what happened in the Round of 16 match between Egypt and Argentina.
Scenario of Egypt and Argentina: The First Spark
In the match between Egypt and Argentina (Round of 16), French referee François Letexier was appointed to officiate the encounter. This appointment caused great astonishment within the Argentine camp, especially given the historical rivalry between France and Argentina since the Qatar 2022 final.
The appointment quickly turned into a subject of intense media attack and skepticism regarding FIFA’s integrity. Letexier faced preemptive attacks through social media and the press in Argentina, with questions about his neutrality.
When the match ended with Argentina winning 3-2 after a commendable performance from Egypt, complaints from the Egyptian side erupted regarding his decisions: a disallowed Egyptian goal, controversial refereeing decisions, and rapid yellow cards.
Many observers and fans believe that this preemptive attack created immense psychological pressure on the French referee. In such decisive matches, the referee becomes under global scrutiny. This pressure – according to the theory – led Letexier to make decisions that appeared “unfair” against Egypt, to prove to the world that he was not biased against Argentina or attempting to “obstruct” them in favor of the French national team (Argentina’s traditional rival).
Morocco and France: Will the Scenario Repeat in Reverse?
Now, it is Facundo Tello and his complete Argentine crew’s turn against France. The match carries complex political and sporting dimensions: Morocco represents “Arab and African hope,” while the former world champions France seek to defend their title. Argentina (the referee’s country) has a competitive history with France.
The French Media Scheme
The French media has begun to work on a strategy hoping to replicate the Egyptian scenario, by targeting the Argentine referee and his crew, amid skepticism about FIFA’s integrity, and accusations of “possible bias” in favor of Morocco.
The goal is to create immense psychological pressure on Tello before the first whistle, so that the referee becomes more cautious or leans – involuntarily – towards decisions that favor France, to prove his “integrity” to the world and distance himself from the suspicion of “bias against France.”
