Tangier hosts one of the largest marine sports events in the world.

The Royal Moroccan Sailing Federation, in partnership with the Royal Yacht Club of Tangier, announced the hosting of the World Optimist Championship 2026 in the capital of the strait, from June 18 to June 28, 2026.

The championship, organized under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI and under the supervision of the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA), is considered one of the largest marine sports events in the world, expected to gather 74 countries and hundreds of young sailors aged between 11 and 15, along with coaches, judges, and international officials.

In this regard, the organizers held a press conference on Tuesday, June 16, where they confirmed that the city will be “a model for the success of this international event,” especially with its exceptional tourist and cultural facilities, along with its experience in organizing major events.

The Optimist class (the category designated for youth) is a fundamental gateway to sailing sports at the global level, as it is where the most prominent future professional sailors begin. Morocco’s hosting of this championship is seen as a golden opportunity to enhance the practice of marine sports among Moroccan youth and to instill values of fair competition, discipline, and teamwork.

Furthermore, the event will be an opportunity to enhance Morocco’s international image as a distinguished sporting and tourist destination, and to promote cultural exchange among youth from various parts of the world.

Ahmed Benani, President of the Royal Moroccan Sailing Federation, affirmed that hosting the championship “is not just organizing a sporting event,” but reflects the strategic vision of the Kingdom in developing marine sports, supporting youth, and enhancing Morocco’s standing on the international stage in sailing sports.
