The Tunisian Football Federation announced, this Tuesday morning, the appointment of French coach Hervé Renard as the coach of the Tunisian national team until the end of its participation in the 2026 World Cup, succeeding coach Sabri Lamouchi.
The appointment of Hervé Renard came after the defeat of the Tunisian team under coach Sabri Lamouchi in its first appearance in the global competition yesterday morning, with a score of five goals to one in the match against the Swedish national team in the first round of group six matches.
The Tunisian Federation clarified on its official Facebook page that an agreement was made with Hervé Renard for him to “begin his duties starting this evening, with the same financial privileges.”
The agreement also stipulates, according to the Federation’s statement, to open negotiations after the end of participation in the World Cup for a “long-term cooperation based on specific sports goals.”
Tunis Afrique Press agency quoted Moaz Mestiri, the spokesperson for the Tunisian Football Federation, confirming that an agreement was reached to terminate the contractual relationship with coach Sabri Lamouchi “by mutual consent” after rumors circulated throughout yesterday about a dispute over the conditions for ending the contract between the two parties.
Coach Lamouchi’s experience did not last long with the “Carthage Eagles,” as he was appointed last January, succeeding coach Sami Tarabulsi.
Before the official match against Sweden, the Tunisian team under Lamouchi played four friendly matches against Haiti (1-0), Canada (1-1), Austria (0-1), and then against Belgium, a match whose result (0-5) raised doubts about the chances of the Tunisian team and criticisms of the coach’s selections.
