Algerians Exploit Spain’s Fires to Launch a Wave of Migration

This morning, Saturday, the beach of El Sombrerico in the city of Las Águilas in the Murcia region of Spain witnessed the arrival of a small boat (patera) carrying approximately 40 undocumented migrants, most of whom are of Algerian nationality, according to circulated video footage and initial reports.

The video that spread on social media showed the boat approaching the shore under the watch of a helicopter, while the migrants descended into the water and headed towards land. Local sources reported that Spanish authorities, represented by the Civil Guard, intervened to handle the incident, providing initial medical assistance to those who arrived.

This incident occurs in the context of increasing irregular migration across the Mediterranean from the Algerian coasts towards southern Spain, where Spanish authorities have recorded several interceptions of boats carrying Algerian migrants in the same area over the past weeks.

Coinciding with Wildfires in Murcia and Spain

Cases of arrivals are rising alongside a wave of wildfires that have swept through areas in Spain, especially in the Murcia region and the neighboring province of Almería in the southeast of the country. These fires have claimed the lives of more than 10 people in Almería alone, amid intense efforts by firefighters to control them under the influence of high temperatures and dry winds.

The fires have led to evacuations and material losses, increasing pressure on local authorities in the affected areas, which has been exploited by traffickers to launch a wave of migration.
