Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita stated that Russia’s position in the United Nations Security Council was key to the adoption of the resolution that supports autonomy and considers it the basis for negotiations.
According to Bourita, the outcome of the resolution hinged on Russia’s stance, as “voting against the resolution” would have completely undermined it. He explained that cooperation with Moscow and Morocco’s positions, including its stance on Ukraine and the king’s role, influenced the country to “abstain.”
Bourita noted that the abstention effectively granted King Mohammed VI the opportunity for the resolution to pass, marking a historic moment that supports autonomy for the first time and recognizes it as a practical foundation for a solution. He also clarified that Russia’s abstention is generally related to its position regarding the penholder, the United States.
