Algeria has announced through state-affiliated newspapers that it will not vote on the upcoming United Nations Security Council resolution if the Moroccan autonomy plan is adopted as the sole basis for resolving the Western Sahara issue.
Simultaneously, Algerian newspapers published headlines stating, “Algeria Will Not Vote.” Publications aligned with the government, such as the Arabic-language “El Khabar” and the French-language “Le Soir,” reported on the country’s stance regarding the decision of major powers, led by the United States, to resolve the dispute while respecting Moroccan sovereignty.
The newspapers assert that Algeria rejects the upcoming UN Security Council resolution concerning Western Sahara, deeming it a blatant violation of previous UN resolutions that affirm the Sahrawi people’s right to a referendum on independence.
Highlighted headlines included: “Algeria Will Not Follow! Algeria Will Not Vote!” The reports emphasized that Algeria will not endorse a Security Council decision acknowledging Moroccan sovereignty that recognizes autonomy as the only solution, instead viewing it as depriving the Sahrawi people of their right to self-determination. According to what the newspapers described as “diplomatic sources,” the project “favors Morocco’s interests at the expense of self-determination principles and undermines the credibility of the United Nations as a whole.”
