U.S. Advisor Optimistic on Western Sahara Resolution
Masad Boulous, U.S. Presidential Advisor for African and Arab Affairs, expressed heightened optimism regarding the resolution of the Western Sahara conflict, which has persisted for over 50 years.
In a televised interview, Boulous affirmed that Western Sahara is “Moroccan desert,” noting that President Donald Trump recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the region. He mentioned ongoing efforts to resolve the dispute in collaboration with various partners.
Boulous praised King Mohammed VI’s recent speech on the Western Sahara issue, calling it “historic,” as it underscored Morocco’s commitment to resolving the matter while preserving the dignity of all parties involved.
In this context, the world, led by the United States, is moving toward adopting Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the sole and definitive solution to this issue. Reports indicate enhancements to the proposal are underway to facilitate an “agreed upon” resolution that honors Moroccan sovereignty and grants the region’s inhabitants broad self-governing powers.
Boulous also commented on Algeria, indicating that they seek to improve relations with their Moroccan neighbors; however, he did not disclose their stance on the global push to settle the issue through the autonomy proposal.
Morocco anticipates a new resolution from the United Nations Security Council regarding the MINURSO mission and the broader issue, with expectations of significant adjustments that could shift the trajectory toward a lasting solution.
