The Head of the Unit for Monitoring the Implementation of Penal Measures and Judicial Decisions at the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Judge Zakaria Al-Arousi, reported that around 193 suspects have been tracked in connection with the “Generation Z” protests that occurred in several Moroccan cities over the past four days.
In a statement to the media, Al-Arousi explained that a request for an investigation has been submitted against 18 suspects, with 16 of them being detained under the order of the investigating judge.
Additionally, 19 suspects have been prosecuted by the relevant public prosecutors while in custody, due to the seriousness of their actions related primarily to public offenses. Notably, some of these individuals were under the influence of narcotics.
Al-Arousi noted that 158 suspects have been pursued while at liberty, while 24 have been classified as not subject to prosecution. Some individuals were released after being questioned in legal records, he stated.
He mentioned that the unauthorized protests included behaviors that were not related to peaceful demonstration, as these events manifested in various forms of violence and vandalism. This included throwing stones at public forces, damaging citizens’ properties, causing material losses to vehicles and shop fronts, committing thefts, setting government-owned cars on fire, and damaging public utility objects.
Given that these actions harmed the safety and security of citizens and fell under the scope of criminalization, judicial investigations were initiated under the supervision of the relevant public prosecutors, in accordance with legal provisions.
The judicial investigations have also revealed the involvement of several minors, who have been referred to juvenile court for appropriate legal measures. Al-Arousi emphasized that these investigations indicated that some individuals had been disseminating digital content on various social media accounts to incite people to protest.
Moreover, digital content was broadcast relating to protests that occurred outside the country, aimed at misleading the public, increasing viewership, and generating financial profit.
He stated that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other individuals suspected of involvement in the events that took place on the night of September 30. Those will be presented to the relevant public prosecutors for appropriate legal action based on the investigation results.
