Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh began an official visit to Morocco from September 21 to 23, marking him as the first Indian Defense Minister to visit the kingdom.
This visit follows an invitation from the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of National Defense Administration, Abdellatif Loudiyi, reflecting the increasing closeness between the two countries in the fields of defense and industry.
### Inauguration of a Defense Factory
A highlight of the visit was Singh’s inauguration of a new factory belonging to Tata Advanced Systems Maroc in Berrechid. The factory will produce an advanced armored platform, the WhAP 8×8.
This facility is the first Indian defense manufacturing plant established in Africa and represents a strategic step under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, aimed at enhancing Indian industrial capabilities and expanding its global presence.
Indian authorities have termed this achievement a “moment of pride,” as it signifies the transition of Indian defense industry from the domestic market to the international arena.
In a tweet on his official X account, Rajnath Singh described the factory as “the first Indian facility for manufacturing defense equipment in Africa,” adding that “this is a significant achievement that reflects the growing footprint of Indian defense industries worldwide.”
### Official Meetings and Memorandum of Understanding
During the visit, Singh will hold bilateral talks with Moroccan counterpart Abdellatif Loudiyi to discuss ways to enhance strategic and defense cooperation between the two countries. He will also meet with Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, to explore opportunities for joint industrial collaboration.
India and Morocco are expected to sign a new memorandum of understanding in the defense sector, aimed at establishing an institutional framework to expand cooperation in training, experience exchange, and linking defense industries.
The Indian Ministry of Defense reported that Indian Navy ships have previously visited the port of Casablanca, and this agreement will further strengthen those ties.
### Engagement with the Indian Community
In addition to official meetings, the Indian Minister will dedicate part of his visit to meet members of the Indian community residing in the capital, Rabat. The Indian government views this step as important for strengthening cultural and social ties between the two peoples, supporting the connection between Indian citizens abroad and their homeland.
