Portuguese-Moroccan runner Isaac Nader clinched the gold medal in the men’s 1500-meter event, marking the first Portuguese victory in this category since Rui Silva’s bronze in 2005.
Nader’s win came after a dramatic race, crossing the finish line in a record time of 3:34.10 minutes, narrowly ahead of British competitor Jake Wightman and Kenyan Reynold Cheruiyot.
Born on August 17, 1999, Nader is considered one of the rising stars in athletics, representing the famed S.L. Benfica club. It is noteworthy that he has Moroccan roots through his father.
This victory, occurring in the absence of a participating Moroccan runner, has led to shock and criticism regarding Moroccan athletics, which only secured a silver medal through Soufiane El Bakkali at the World Championships.
